"BUSINESSES will call this week for the government to underwrite billions of pounds of infrastructure investment, amid evidence that its existing schemes have 'failed'.

"The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), which represents more than 100,000 firms, will tomorrow back the coalition’s austerity plans, but call for the chancellor to do far more to encourage private sector investment.

"George Osborne is coming under intense pressure to unveil bold measures in next week’s budget after the latest data showed that the economy is still struggling to emerge from the downturn. Output from the construction sector fell 6.3% in January, and is still 7.9% lower than a year ago."
